One of the largest Wikihouse structures built in the UK to date – a four bedroom family home built on a multi household self-build development on the outskirts of the Lake District National park. This project was over a year in the making as we worked with the client and our friends over at Architecture Unknown to develop the plans for this stunning timber frame eco home.

The plot, which was previously a smallholding farm with multiple outbuildings, was bought by a group of likeminded individuals who all wanted to build their own homes. Although there is a theme of eco conscious building throughout the development, there are some radically different building methods going on side by side. One live oak timber frame, built from scratch using timber milled on the site, one “traditional” timber frame build, one SIPs prefab style build and one Wikihouse timber eco build all complimenting each other with their use of sustainable building materials and practices.

Situated on the edge of the Lake District, the site has been arranged with 5 separate house plots, backing onto a large shared allotment/poly tunnel and a large wild flower meadow, all bordered on two edges by a beautiful tree lined river. These shared spaces are all co-owned by the residents of the development and add a beautiful feeling of openness to the site whilst also providing a space to grow and play. We were very excited for the opportunity to get involved with such an innovative project.
